IN LOVING MEMORY
OFFICER GARY DEAN MOSS
Gary Moss started his career with Hermosa Beach on March 9, 1981. He was assigned to patrol and then went to traffic working as a motor officer. On June 24, 1982, he was working with fellow motor officer Paul Wolcott and both were in the process of catching speeding motorcycles eastbound on Aviation Boulevard. While trying to catch the speeding motorcycles, a drunk driver turned left in front of them and a horrific collision occurred resulting in the death of Officer Gary Moss and critical injuries to Officer Paul Wolcott. It was later determined that the motorcyclists had committed a robbery and were fleeing the scene. Officer Paul Wolcott went through a long recovery process. After two years he fully recovered and returned to the Hermosa Beach Police Department as an officer. He retired after 30 years of law enforcement service on October 3, 2008.
