Temporary Features Installed to Test Concepts for Improving the Safety of People Walking, Cycling and Driving on the Busy Residential Street  

HERMOSA BEACH, CA – The City of Hermosa Beach is seeking the community’s feedback on the Safer Prospect Demonstration Project’s temporary safety features that were recently installed on Prospect Avenue in response to residents’ concerns about pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle safety along the busy residential corridor. 

The City received extensive community input on how to improve safety on the street during the design phase of the temporary safety features on Prospect Avenue at 9th, 10th, 14th and 15th Streets. The purpose of the Demonstration Project is to test concepts for improving the safety of people walking, cycling and driving on Prospect Avenue. 

The City of Hermosa Beach now invites community members to visit these safety improvements, learn more about the Demonstration Project and take the Safer Prospect Survey to help the City determine the effectiveness of the temporary safety features. 

Families and individuals are also encouraged to participate in the Stride and Seek Challenge, a fun opportunity to explore the project that includes a short quiz about it. Participants can answer as few or as many questions as they like. For every correct response, participants will receive one raffle entry for the chance to win prizes from local businesses.

The Demonstration Project on Prospect Avenue includes a mini traffic circle at 10th Street; curb extensions at 9th, 14th and 15th Streets; and a new crosswalk and pedestrian island at 14th Street. These temporary safety improvements are intended to make the street safer for all users by slowing vehicles and improving coordination between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. 

Before the busy Memorial Day weekend, the City temporarily removed signage for the mini traffic circle at 10th Street to reconsider the signage installation. The City reassessed the design, is making some modifications and will restore the signage and mini traffic circle either this week or next. The City will continue to assess the Demonstration Project and make adjustments, as needed, to improve public safety.
